Out of Africa

April 3, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Well not quite, not sure about whether to make a trip Africa?

The cinema can be a good way to get a flavour of a country or place, ones I’ve seen and recommend:

The African Queen
King Solomon’s Mines (three to choose from)
Black Hawk Down
Gorillas in the Mist
Out Of Africa

Become an NDCS Challenger and you could take one of three trips across this wonderful continent. Firstly there are treks to Kilimanjaro and the Simien Mountains in Ethiopia , while we are also cycling the Nile , with plans to cycle the Garden Route through South Africa in 2009.

Others films with an African backdrop include:

Cry Freedom
Blood Diamond
Amistad
The Constant Gardener
The Last King of Scotland

Are there others you’d add to the list?

As it’s The London Marathon next week we will be looking at top tunes to run to!

Under African skies

Long way down

This week on the train I’ve spent my time going through some of the wild and exciting, yet some of the poorest places in the world. No not the wilds of Essex or East London, Africa.

I’ve been joining Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman on their trip the Long Way Down from John O’Groats to Cape Town. A great read giving an insight into what it must be like to travel 15,000 miles through Africa on a bike. They meet some amazing people, enjoying the sights and the sounds it offers.

Take a look at a clip from the show promo:
